Project Overview

  • Specialized art gallery-grade HVAC equipment, ductwork and controls required to maintain the building at a constant humidity level
  • Managed work around an active campus and in close proximity to occupied buildings
  • Preserved the historic building features while integrating state-of-the-art gallery and conference spaces

In 2004, Boston College acquired property once owned by the Archdiocese of Boston, and elected to transform the former Cardinal’s residence into a museum and conference center on its Brighton campus. The re-purposed facility includes a 7,310 sq. ft. curtain wall-clad addition, which serves as the new entrance and lobby; the integration of new architectural features and mechanical systems; and landscaping to complement the updated facility.

Prior to the start of construction, we relocated gas and utility lines located within the footprint of the addition. The updated ground and first floors of this former residence provide conference and administrative space, featuring the integration of high-tech audio/visual systems, while preserving the original historic finishes such as intricate millwork and marble flooring. The upper floors were transformed into galleries, framing rooms, art preparation and administrative space, which required robust HVAC, lighting and humidity controls to maintain the collections.
